********************************** HACKICON *********************************
HackIconIII is Copyright © 1992 by Doug Walker. Feel free to redistribute
this program or whatever you wish, but any commercial use of it should be
cleared with the copyright holder.
HackIconIII is an editor designed to allow you to change the icons that HACK
uses. To use it, simply type 'HackIconIII' or click on its icon from
workbench. If you wish, you may also specify one or two filenames on the
CLI command line (although this is, of course, impossible from workbench).
HACK expects its icons to be in the file 'characters.8'. I suggest you make
a copy of this file to work from, just in case you don't like the changes
you make. If the file you specify ends with the characters "16", HackIconIII
will assume the file is meant for a 16-color screen and it will allow you
to choose 16 colors to draw your characters. The "16" suffix method is the
same one used by HackLite to determine how many colors to display.
Once you get into HackIconIII, everything is menu-driven. Hold the right
mouse button to see the menu titles, then move the cursor over your
selection and release it to execute it. The following menu selections are
available when you start up:
LOAD - Selecting LOAD (or hitting the right AMIGA key and 'L'
simultaneously) will bring up a requestor asking you to type in a
file name. The default name is 'characters', the HACK icon file.
Click in the box containing the word 'characters', backspace over
the word itself and type in the name of the file you want to edit.
then click 'OK' to load the file or 'CANCEL' to abort loading.
The name of the current file is displayed in the title bar.
The maximum number of files you can edit at once is two.
SAVE - Selecting SAVE (or Right-AMIGA-S) saves the current file back to
where you loaded it from.
SAVEAS - Selecting SAVEAS (or Right-AMIGA-A) brings up a requestor (like the
LOAD requestor) which allows you to choose a name to save the file
to.
COLORS - Selecting COLORS (or Right-AMIGA-C) brings up a color selection
window. Use the mouse to click on one of the color patches on the
right, and then adjust the Red, Green and Blue sliders on the left
to get the color you want. When the COLORS window is active, you
have a modified set of menus available. There are two sets of
menus, PROJECT and COLORS. The PROJECT menu contains the
following:
USE - (Right-AMIGA-U) exits to the editor keeping changes
RESET - (Right-AMIGA-T) resets to the way they were when you
started
CANCEL- (Right-AMIGA-C) exits and cancels changes
The COLORS menu contains the following:
ORIGINAL COLORS - (Right-AMIGA-O) resets to THIS FONT's original
palette
ALTFONT COLORS - (Right-AMIGA-F) resets to the ALTERNATE FONT's
original palette
ALTFONT - Selecting ALTFONT (or Right-AMIGA-F) switches the current icon font
being displayed to the second loaded font. Note that you must have
a second font loaded, either via the LOAD item or on the command
line.
COPY - Selecting COPY (or Right-Amiga-P) changes your cursor to the word
FROM. Select an icon to copy from by clicking the left mouse
button. Then your cursor becomes a TO. Select an icon to copy
to with the left mouse button. Your menus change to say only
ALTFONT and QUIT; ALTFONT still switches fonts, so you can copy
characters from one font to the other, and QUIT aborts the copy.
COPY MULT - Selecting COPY MULT (Right-AMIGA-N) is just like COPY except
after you have selected a TO character, it starts over at the
word FROM. When you have finished copying, select QUIT from
the menu.
QUIT - Quits the editor.
To edit an icon, simply click on its slot (directly over the label for it.)
Assuming you've loaded a font, an EDIT window will come up. Select a color
on the right by clicking on it, then draw your icon with the mouse on the
left. You can draw continuously by holding down the left button. A set
of EDIT menus is available. The PROJECT menu is as follows:
USE - (Right-AMIGA-U) Returns to the main screen, keeping changes
RESET - (Right-AMIGA-T) Resets the character to the way it was when you
started editing.
CANCEL- (Right_AMIGA-C) Returns to the main screen, cancelling changes
The EDIT menu has the following:
FLIP - This item has two subitems, X (Right-Amiga-X) and Y (Right-AMIGA-Y).
When selected, they flip the image horizontally or vertically.
ROTATE - This item has three subitems, +90 (Right-AMIGA-G),
-90 (Right-AMIGA-H) and 180 (Right-AMIGA-I). When selected, they
rotate the character counterclockwise, clockwise or 180 degrees.
SHIFT - This item has four subitems, LEFT (Right-AMIGA-L),
RIGHT (Right-AMIGA-R), UP (Right-AMIGA-U) and DOWN (Right-AMIGA-D).
When selected, they shift the whole character in the appropriate
direction. The pixels on the edge you are shifting towards are
LOST!!!
